Description

Christmas Day in Poland is a national public holiday celebrated on December 25. It is one of two main days at the end of the year that many people have off work and school to rest and be with family.

Flag of Christmas Day

For many Poles the day has a strong religious meaning. It marks the birth of Jesus Christ in the Christian faith. Churches hold special services and many people attend to reflect on their beliefs.

Beyond religion the day is a time to emphasize family and community. It is seen as a moment to slow down, appreciate loved ones, and reflect on the year that passed.

Christmas Day is important for Polish culture and identity. It brings together history, faith, and a sense of shared values that are central to public and private life in Poland.

Traditions

On Christmas Eve families gather for Wigilia. They wait for the first star and often fast until the meal. Before eating they share opłatek. Each person breaks and offers wishes. An extra place at the table honors unexpected guests or absent loved ones.

The dinner has many dishes. People serve fish like carp, beetroot soup called barszcz, pierogi, and twelve meatless dishes in some homes. A small amount of hay under the tablecloth reminds of the nativity. After dinner they exchange gifts placed under the Christmas tree and sing kolędy.

Many attend Pasterka, the midnight mass. Houses are decorated with lights and nativity scenes. Children enjoy sweets and adults drink to health and family happiness.

Travel Tips

Many shops, banks and offices are closed on Christmas Day. Public transport runs less often and some museums close or have short hours. Buy food and medicine in advance, check train and flight times, and book tickets early.

Carry some cash and a charged phone. Look for emergency pharmacies on duty and use official taxi apps. Join public concerts or city light displays to enjoy the day safely. Keep a copy of your passport and emergency numbers with you.
