Laylat al-Qadr 2025
Date: March 27, 2025 (Thursday)
Country: Republic of the Niger Public Holidays
Description
Laylat al Qadr is a very special night in Islam. In the Republic of the Niger many people see it as the holiest night of the year. It is called the Night of Power or Night of Decree.
The night falls during the last ten nights of Ramadan. Many people observe it on the 27th night, but the exact night can vary because the lunar calendar shifts each year. It always happens before the end of Ramadan.
This night marks when the first verses of the Quran began to be revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. Because of that, believers consider it a time when prayers and good deeds have great value.
Laylat al Qadr is important because it is seen as a chance for forgiveness and mercy. Muslims believe blessings are multiplied and that God makes important decisions during this night for the year ahead.
Traditions
In Niger families and friends gather at mosques and homes for long night prayers and Quran recitation. People stay awake in groups, taking turns to lead prayers and read quietly so everyone can join the recitation and reflection.
Communities share food after prayer. Common dishes include millet porridge, rice stews, grilled meat and dates. Neighbors bring plates to each other so those who are tired or poor can eat and join the night vigils.
Giving to others is important. People give small donations, extra food and help to needy families. Some visit relatives and elderly neighbors to pray together, exchange blessings and strengthen community bonds during the holy night.
