Martyrdom of Imam Reza 2025
Date: August 24, 2025 (Sunday)
Country: Iran Public Holidays
Description
Martyrdom of Imam Reza marks the death of Ali al Ridha, the eighth Shia imam. For many people in Iran it is a solemn day to remember his role as a religious leader, teacher, and guide.
The holiday takes place each year on the anniversary of his death in the Islamic lunar month of Safar. Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, the date moves earlier by about eleven days each year in the Gregorian calendar.
It is significant because Imam Reza is seen as a model of piety, knowledge, and moral courage. His life and death are important for Shia identity and religious history, and his legacy influences theology and community values in Iran.
Traditions
People wear black clothes and gather in mosques and halls. They sit for speeches and listen to sad poems and stories about the Imam. Clerics lead chants and recite parts of the Quran softly.
Groups march in quiet processions in streets. People beat their chests gently to show sorrow. Many light candles or place black banners and pictures near homes and public places.
Families cook and share free food called nazri. Common dishes are soup, stew, rice, bread, sweets, tea and dates. Volunteers serve food to anyone who comes, including the poor and visitors.
At the Imam Reza shrine locals and pilgrims clean the area, organize lines for prayers and offer charity. Mourning lasts several days with repeated gatherings and recitations.
Travel Tips
Many shops, museums and some restaurants in Mashhad close or change hours. Expect large crowds and road closures near the shrine. Public transport and taxis get very busy. Book hotels and transport early and carry ID and cash.
Wear respectful clothing and follow local rules. Join organized tours or visit quieter sites outside procession times. Stay with your group, keep your phone charged, drink water, and listen to officials for safety updates. Be patient and polite to enjoy the city meaningfully.
