Description

Mab'ath of Muhammad is the day many Muslims in Iran remember when Muhammad was chosen by God to be a prophet. It marks the start of his mission to teach the message of Islam to people everywhere.

This observance usually falls on the 27th day of the Islamic month of Rajab. Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, the exact date changes each year compared to the common solar calendar.

The holiday is important because it celebrates the beginning of the revelations that form the Quran. For many Iranians it is a time to reflect on the values Muhammad taught, such as compassion, justice, and care for others.

In Iran the day has both religious and national meaning. It helps people remember a key moment in Islamic history and the role those early teachings play in the lives and identity of the community.

Traditions

People gather in mosques and community halls for prayers, Quran recitation, and speeches praising the Prophet. Men, women, and children listen to poems and religious songs. Some places hold small processions with banners and lights along neighborhood streets.

Families prepare and share special foods like sweet rice, halva, and trays of dates and nuts. People bring extra plates to give to neighbors and the poor. Sweets are handed to children who sing or chant short praises.

Charity is common with donations of food and money to local charities. Many homes and centers light lamps or candles and hang green or white cloth. Elders lead blessings and everyone joins in communal recitation and short supplications.

Travel Tips

Many shops, museums, banks, and government offices may close or have shorter hours. Expect crowded streets near main mosques and processions. Public transport can be busier than usual, so plan extra travel time and book trains or flights early.

Dress respectfully and follow local rules at busy sites. Stay with your group and keep valuables secure in crowds. Join guided visits or quieter parks for meaningful time without entering religious ceremonies. Carry water, a charged phone, and emergency contacts.
