Description

Easter Monday is a public holiday in Zimbabwe that follows Easter Sunday. For many people it continues the Christian celebration of Jesus rising from the dead. The day is meant for reflection and quiet observance of that belief.

The holiday always falls on the Monday after Easter Sunday. Because Easter moves each year, the date of Easter Monday also changes. Easter is tied to the spring full moon, so the Monday can be in March or April depending on the calendar.

Easter Monday is significant because it is a nationally recognized day of rest. Schools, government offices, and many businesses close so people can mark the important time together or alone. It gives a pause from normal work and school routines.

For Zimbabwe the day also reflects the countrywide importance of Christian holidays in the public calendar. As a statutory holiday it highlights shared values and allows people across communities to observe a meaningful time in the year.

Traditions

On Easter Monday many Zimbabweans spend time with family and church friends. After morning services people often visit relatives, share meals, and sit outside to talk. Children run and play games while adults catch up and relax.

Food is important. Families cook sadza with meat or chicken, stews, roasted maize and vegetables. Braais or outdoor barbecues are common, with people bringing food to share. Sweet treats and soft drinks appear at picnics, and homemade cakes may be served.

Communities hold music, drumming and dance, sometimes with mbira or hosho. Local football matches and friendly competitions happen in villages and towns. Some people visit graves to tidy them and leave flowers, showing respect for loved ones.

Travel Tips

Banks, government offices and many shops close on Easter Monday. Tourist sites and parks can be busier than usual. Book transport and accommodation ahead, carry extra cash in case ATMs are empty, and expect delays on main roads.

Enjoy the day by joining guided tours or local markets and supporting small vendors. Go to national parks early, stay in groups, carry water, sun protection and your ID. Avoid remote areas at night and follow park and guide safety rules to have a safe, meaningful visit.
