Eid al Adha happens each year on the 10th day of the Islamic month Dhu al Hijjah. The exact date changes because the Islamic calendar is lunar. It usually falls about two months after the end of Ramadan.

The holiday is linked with the pilgrimage to Mecca, called Hajj. It marks the main days of that pilgrimage and is a time when Muslims remember spiritual duty and devotion to God.

In Kosovo Eid al Adha is a public holiday. It is significant because it brings families and communities together in shared faith, charity, and remembrance of obedience and sacrifice.

Traditions

Families gather early to visit the mosque for the Eid prayer. After prayer, people hug and greet each other with "Urime Bajrami" and visit relatives. Children receive small gifts or money and wear new or their best clothes.

A sheep or lamb is usually slaughtered at home or by a trusted butcher. Meat is divided among family, neighbors, and the poor. Women cook special dishes like roasted lamb, rice, byrek, and sweet pastries such as baklava for large shared meals.

People clean and decorate homes, light candles, and sometimes visit cemeteries to honor relatives. Neighbors are welcomed with food, and hospitality is important. Acts of charity and sharing food are central parts of the celebration.

Travel Tips

Many shops, banks, and government offices close for several days. Public transport and taxis run less often. Expect busy roads before and after the holiday. Carry cash and know where open ATMs and pharmacies are located.

Book hotels and trains early. Visit parks, museums, and cafes that stay open. Follow local dress and behavior rules, keep belongings safe, and ask hotel staff about events and safe areas to see celebrations from a distance.
