Description

Feast of the Sacrifice, called Kurban Bayramı in Turkey, is an important Muslim holiday. It honors Prophet Ibrahim and his willingness to obey God. The name shows the idea of giving and devotion.

The holiday takes place each year according to the Islamic lunar calendar. It begins on the 10th day of the month called Dhu al Hijjah. Because the calendar is lunar, the date moves earlier by about eleven days each year.

In Turkey the holiday is a public and bank holiday lasting several days. Many people use the time to be with family and to remember shared beliefs. Public life slows down and official services pause.

The festival is closely linked to the pilgrimage to Mecca called Hajj. This connection gives the day added religious meaning for Muslims worldwide, including people in Turkey.

The feast is significant because it emphasizes faith, obedience, and caring for others. It also reinforces community bonds and religious identity across Turkish society.

Traditions

On the first morning people gather for communal Bayram prayers at mosques or open spaces. Families wear new or their best clothes. Younger people greet elders by kissing hands and saying Bayramınız kutlu olsun while visiting relatives.

Many households arrange the kurban sacrifice at home or licensed slaughterhouses. A chosen animal is inspected, slaughtered with care, and the meat is divided into three parts. Families keep some, share with relatives, and give a large portion to neighbors and those in need.

Meals focus on the fresh meat with roasted lamb or kebab, pilav, and vegetable dishes. Tables end with baklava, lokum, strong coffee and tea. Children enjoy bayram money, sweets, and visiting neighbors for friendly chats.

Travel Tips

Many banks, government offices and some shops close during Eid al Adha. Expect heavy traffic, crowded buses, trains and airports. Book tickets and hotels early. Bring ID and copies. Check opening hours for museums and restaurants before you go.

Be respectful in public and follow local guidance in crowds. Join public events, charity drives or quiet neighbourhood gatherings to experience local life. Leave extra time for travel, avoid peak departure days and keep valuables safe in busy places.
