Feast of the Sacrifice (Eid al-Adha) 2025
Date: June 7, 2025 (Saturday)
Country: Togolese Republic Public Holidays
Description
Feast of the Sacrifice, also called Eid al Adha, is an important Islamic holiday and a public holiday in the Togolese Republic. It is a time many Muslims remember a key story of faith and duty.
The holiday falls on the 10th day of the Islamic month Dhu al Hijjah. The Islamic calendar is lunar, so the date moves earlier by about 10 or 11 days each year when compared to the solar calendar used for most civil dates.
Eid al Adha recalls the Prophet Ibrahim and his readiness to obey God. For Muslims it stands for strong faith, trust in God, and willingness to put belief into action through sacrifice and obedience.
In Togo the day is significant because it helps people show care for family and community. The public holiday lets people gather, support those in need, and reflect on spiritual duties and shared values across the country.
Traditions
In Togo families wake early to attend large outdoor prayers. After prayer men often organize the ritual slaughter of goats, sheep, or cows. Neighbors and relatives gather to watch and help with the work.
Meat is quickly shared with family, neighbors, and poorer people. Households prepare big plates of grilled meat, stews and fufu or akume with spicy sauces. People sit together and eat during long festive meals.
Women and girls may apply henna, wear new colorful clothes, and decorate homes with fabric and flowers. Children get sweets or small gifts and run between houses to greet neighbors.
Visits and polite greetings are important. People exchange "Eid Mubarak," visit elders, and give charity to ensure everyone in the community can join the celebration.
Travel Tips
Expect banks, many shops and some government offices to be closed or have short hours. Public transport can be crowded and roads busier before and after the holiday, so plan extra travel time and book taxis or buses early.
Join public events and markets with respect and modest dress. Avoid busy sacrificial areas and follow police directions. Try local restaurants open for visitors and stay in well known hotels. Carry ID, keep valuables secure, and let your hotel know your plans for a safer visit.
