The holiday falls on the 10th day of the Islamic month of Dhu al Hijjah. It comes right after the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca called the Hajj. Because the Islamic calendar is lunar the date changes each year.

In Chad many people observe this day as a national public holiday. Schools, banks, and government offices often close so families and communities can take part in religious services and time together.

The festival is significant because it teaches obedience, trust, and generosity. It reminds people to help those in need and to strengthen family and community bonds. It links Chadian Muslims to the wider Muslim world through shared faith.

Traditions

People go to the mosque for special prayers in the morning. Families wear new or their best clothes. Men often lead the prayers while women and children join in community areas or at home.

Households buy and sacrifice animals like sheep, goats, cows or camels. The meat is cut and cooked for big shared meals. Families make stews, grilled meat and millet or rice dishes to serve guests.

Much of the meat is divided into three parts. One part for the home, one for relatives and friends, and one for the poor and neighbors. Giving to those in need is very important.

People visit relatives, exchange greetings and sweets. Markets are lively before the day with singing and drumming in some communities. Families also remember loved ones who have passed by visiting graves.

Travel Tips

Many government offices, banks and some shops close for several days. Expect busy markets and main roads in the morning and evening. Book transport and hotels early. Carry ID, cash and water. Plan extra travel time for road traffic.

Wear modest clothes and ask before taking photos. Join public events or visit open markets to enjoy local life safely. Avoid large crowds and stay near well lit, populated areas after dark. Know local emergency numbers and your hotel address in French or Arabic.
