Description

SPLA Day honors the Sudan People s Liberation Army. The SPLA began as a rebel force that fought for freedom and rights in what is now South Sudan. The holiday remembers those who served and those who lost their lives.

Flag of SPLA Day

The day is observed on May 16 each year. That date marks the founding of the SPLA in 1983. It is an official day of remembrance in South Sudan and appears on national calendars.

SPLA Day is significant because the SPLA played a central role in the long struggle for self determination. Its actions helped lead to the creation of South Sudan as an independent country in 2011.

For many people the holiday is a time to reflect on national history, to honor courage and sacrifice, and to think about unity and the challenges of building a peaceful nation. It connects the past fight with hopes for the future.

Traditions

People gather for parades and marches. Soldiers and veterans wear uniforms while bands play drums and brass instruments. Schools and youth groups join with colourful banners and choreographed dances in public squares and stadiums.

Families and neighbours prepare big communal meals. They cook grilled meat, stews with sorghum or cassava, and share flat breads and millet porridge. Food is served on large plates so everyone eats together.

People visit monuments to lay wreaths and flowers. There are speeches that honour those who served. Churches and mosques hold special prayers and moments of silence to remember and give thanks.

Public celebrations include singing, traditional dances, and storytelling. Markets sell crafts and flags. Children play games and wear small flags or ribbons to show pride.

Travel Tips

Expect government offices, many banks and some shops to be closed. Public transport may run less often in the morning and very busy after events. Plan transfers and flights in advance and carry cash in small notes for markets and taxis.

Attend public events with a friend, follow police directions, and keep valuables safe. Wear comfortable shoes and sun protection. Support local vendors, buy crafts, and visit community markets during quieter afternoon times to enjoy the day respectfully and safely.
