Hari Raya Haji is an important Muslim festival in Singapore. It is also called Eid al Adha. The holiday honors a story from Islam about faith and willingness to obey God.

It falls on the 10th day of Dhu al Hijjah. Dhu al Hijjah is the last month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The exact date moves earlier each year by about 10 or 11 days in the Gregorian calendar.

The day is linked with the Hajj pilgrimage. Many Muslims around the world are completing or remember the pilgrimage at this time. In Singapore the day is a public holiday for reflection and community.

The meaning of the holiday centers on sacrifice, obedience, and care for others. It reminds Muslims to be faithful, to help those in need, and to think about their responsibilities to family and society.

For Singaporeans the holiday also shows the plural nature of the nation. It is a time when people of different backgrounds recognize the importance of faith and communal support.

Traditions

On Hari Raya Haji many Muslims in Singapore attend mosque for the special congregational prayer and listen to the sermon. Families wear new or best clothes like baju Melayu and baju kurung for the day.

Communities perform the qurban ritual at approved centres. Livestock are slaughtered according to Islamic rules. Meat is then portioned and given to family, neighbors and those in need around the neighborhood.

Families and friends gather for meals. Typical dishes include rendang, ketupat, lemang and curry. People also cook satay and spicy stews to share at open houses.

Children often receive small gifts or money. Neighbors and relatives visit each other to exchange greetings, forgive, and celebrate together in a warm friendly way.

Travel Tips

Check opening hours before you go. Some shops, eateries and attractions may close or open late. Roads and car parks near mosques get busy after prayer times. Public transport can be crowded, so plan trips earlier or later than peak times.

Dress modestly and act respectfully when near religious sites. Join public events or community bazaars to experience local life safely. Carry water, book taxis or rides in advance, and keep valuables secure. Be patient and follow any posted signs or police directions.
