Description

Deepavali is a Hindu festival whose name means Festival of Lights. It celebrates the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. The holiday points to hope, inner brightness, and the idea that knowledge can overcome fear and ignorance.

The date follows the Hindu lunar calendar so it changes each year. In Singapore it usually falls in October or November. The government announces the public holiday date annually so everyone knows which day is observed and when schools and offices close.

Deepavali is important to Hindu Singaporeans and to the wider society. It is a time for reflection, giving thanks, and strengthening family and community bonds. The celebration highlights multicultural Singapore and the role of different traditions in the national identity.

Because it is a major religious festival, many people see Deepavali as a moment for personal renewal. The holiday reminds people to seek goodness, learn from the past, and share light and kindness with others.

Traditions

Homes are cleaned and decorated with colorful kolam patterns at the door. Oil lamps and fairy lights are lit to brighten rooms. Families wear new clothes and display fresh flowers and rangoli to welcome guests.

People visit relatives and friends to exchange sweets and small gifts. Large family meals include dishes like biryani, samosas, murukku, ladoo and other Indian sweets. Neighbors often share food and invite each other for tea.

Temples hold special prayers and devotees offer flowers and fruit. Many light rows of small lamps and incense. Streets and shopping areas have stalls selling snacks, decorations and traditional clothes. Cultural performances and music are common during the evening.
