Epiphany 2025
Date: January 6, 2025 (Monday)
Country: Romania Public Holidays
Description
Epiphany in Romania is a Christian holiday that honors the moment God revealed Jesus to the world. Romanians call it Boboteaza. It is a time to remember the spiritual meaning of Jesus as both human and divine.
The holiday takes place each year on January 6. This date follows the twelve days after Christmas. For many churches it ends the Christmas season and begins a new period of prayer and reflection.
Epiphany is especially important in Romania because most people belong to the Orthodox Church. The day brings communities together in worship at churches and in family gatherings focused on faith.
People treat the day with respect and quiet joy. It reminds Romanians of their shared history, Christian identity, and the importance of blessing life and the natural world through faith.
Traditions
In villages and towns people gather at rivers, lakes or the sea for the Boboteaza water blessing. A priest throws a wooden or metal cross into the cold water and young men dive to catch it.
After the blessing priests sprinkle holy water on homes, animals and fields. They use a special sprig or brush and villagers welcome the blessing by making the sign of the cross and kissing the priest s hand or cross.
Groups of carolers sing special Boboteaza songs from house to house. Hosts give small treats and sometimes money.
Traditional foods that day often include fish dishes and sweet breads or cozonac. Families share a warm meal and celebrate being together.
Travel Tips
Many shops, banks and public offices have reduced hours or are closed. Check opening times and public transport schedules in advance. Some tourist sites stay open but may change hours, so book tickets and tours early.
Expect crowded roads and public places in the morning and early afternoon. Buy train or bus tickets ahead and arrive early to avoid queues. Stay safe on icy sidewalks, keep valuables close, follow police or event staff instructions, and support local cafes or shops to enjoy the day respectfully.
