Description

Eid al Adha or Feast of the Sacrifice is an important Islamic holiday observed by Filipino Muslims and recognized nationally. It honors the willingness of the prophet Abraham to obey God and shows deep faith and trust.

The date changes each year because it follows the Islamic lunar calendar. It falls on the 10th day of Dhu al Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic year. The day also coincides with the time of the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca.

In the Philippines the holiday is a public recognition of the Muslim faith and its place in the nation. Many communities and families pause regular work and school to observe the day with prayer and reflection.

The celebration carries meanings of devotion, sacrifice, sharing, and caring for others. It reminds people to be generous and to think about those in need, strengthening bonds within families and across communities.

Traditions

Muslim communities gather at mosques for special prayers and recitation. People wear new or their best clothes and greet each other with warm wishes. Families and neighbors often visit one another to share time and food.

Households perform the qurbani ritual by slaughtering an animal according to religious rules. Meat is divided into portions for family, relatives, and those in need. Giving to the poor is important and seen everywhere during the holiday.

Meals include grilled meats, biryani, kebabs, rendang, and local rice dishes. Sweet treats and rice cakes are common. Children receive small gifts or money, and communities celebrate with singing, visiting, and showing extra kindness to others.

Travel Tips

Expect government offices and many banks to be closed. Some shops and restaurants may have reduced hours. Airports, ferries, and major roads get very busy around peak travel days. Book transport and hotels early and carry ID and copies of bookings.

Join public celebrations or community events to enjoy the mood, and be respectful of local customs. Avoid crowded or animal handling areas for safety and hygiene. Keep valuables secure, follow local signage, and ask hotel staff for reliable places to eat and shop.
