Description

Matariki is the name for the cluster of stars known in English as the Pleiades. In Aotearoa New Zealand the rising of these stars marks the start of the Māori New Year.

Flag of Matariki

The holiday takes place in late June or July. Each year the date is set according to the Māori lunar calendar and the stars first becoming visible before dawn. Since 2022 it is also a national public holiday.

Matariki means remembering people who have died and celebrating new life ahead. It is a time for families and communities to come together to think about the past year and to plan for the future.

The occasion is significant for Māori culture and for all New Zealanders. It connects people to the sky, the seasons, and the environment, and strengthens cultural identity and shared memory.

Traditions

People gather for dawn star watching and karakia to mark the start of activities. Communities meet in marae, schools, parks and town halls to sing waiata, perform haka and share stories and pūrākau about ancestors.

Feasts and shared meals are common. Families prepare kai such as hangi, smoked fish, kūmara and seasonal dishes. People bring food to share in communal plates and enjoy a big shared meal with friends and whānau.

Many events include planting and harvesting activities, workshops on weaving and crafts, and arts events. Children take part in games, storytelling and learning about traditional skills in fun hands on ways.

Ceremonies to remember those who passed are held with quiet moments, karakia and laments. Lanterns, candles and waiata are used to bring people together in respectful celebration.

Travel Tips

Check opening hours and book ahead. Many shops, banks and some services close or run reduced hours. Public transport and roads near events get busy, so allow extra travel time and arrive early to avoid crowds.

Join community events, buy from local markets and follow signs and marshals. Stay with your group, wear warm clothes and bring water. Be respectful of spaces, take rubbish with you, and follow any safety rules so everyone can enjoy the day.
