Id el Kabir 2025
Date: June 6, 2025 (Friday)
Country: Nigeria Public Holidays
Description
Id el Kabir, also called Eid al Adha, is a major Islamic holiday celebrated by Muslims in Nigeria. The name means the festival of sacrifice and it honors faith and obedience to God.
The holiday recalls the story of the prophet Abraham and his willingness to obey God. It is a time for remembering mercy, faith, and trust in God across the Muslim community.
Id el Kabir falls on the 10th day of Dhu al Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Because the calendar is lunar, the date moves earlier by about ten to eleven days each year.
In Nigeria the day is important for spiritual reflection, giving to those in need, and strengthening ties between families and neighbors. It brings communities together in shared faith and purpose.
Nationally, Id el Kabir is one of the two biggest Islamic holidays. The government usually declares it a public holiday so people can observe the day with their families and communities.
Traditions
Families wake early to dress in new or tidy clothes. Neighbors and relatives greet one another with hugs and handshakes. Children visit homes to collect small gifts and sweets from adults.
Many go to communal prayers at mosques or open grounds. After prayers people exchange warm wishes and sometimes visit graves to remember loved ones. Community leaders may give short speeches.
Homes fill with special foods. Roasted or stewed sheep or goat is common. Rice dishes like jollof or pilau appear. Shared plates and plenty of tea or soft drinks keep everyone happy.
Charity is important. Families give meat, money, or food to poorer neighbors. Visiting friends and sharing meals builds bonds and joy across communities.
