Orthodox Christmas Eve 2025
Date: January 6, 2025 (Monday)
Country: Macedonia Public Holidays
Description
Orthodox Christmas Eve in Macedonia is the evening before the Orthodox Christmas Day. It falls on January 6 according to the modern calendar. The Macedonian Orthodox Church follows the older church calendar, so Christmas is celebrated on January 7.
This evening marks the end of Advent. It is a time to prepare for the celebration of Jesus being born. People think about faith, hope, and the meaning of Christ coming into the world.
The holiday is important for both religion and culture. It connects families and local communities. It helps people feel a link to their ancestors and to Macedonian history.
For many it is a quiet, serious moment. It is a pause to remember spiritual teachings and to look forward to renewal and peace in the coming year.
Traditions
On Christmas Eve families prepare the badnjak, an oak branch brought into the home and placed by the hearth. It is lit or blessed to bring warmth and good luck for the house and family.
People fast during the day, then gather for a festive evening meal. They bake a round bread often with a coin hidden inside. Whoever finds the coin is said to get luck in the coming year.
Koljivo or sladko is served, a sweet dish of boiled wheat with honey, nuts, and raisins. Other foods include roasted pork, salads, and homemade desserts after the fast is broken.
Groups of koledari go from house to house singing carols late at night or early morning. Families also light candles, pray before icons, and share blessings and small gifts.
Travel Tips
Many shops, banks, and museums close or have short hours on Orthodox Christmas Eve. Public transport can run less often. Expect busy roads and limited parking near main squares and churches. Book taxis and parking ahead when possible.
Join public events early and stay with the crowd. Carry small change because some vendors use cash only. Keep your passport and phone safe. Dress warmly and be calm around crowded places. Check local news or your hotel for last minute schedule changes.
