Description

Easter Sunday in Lithuania is a very important Christian holiday. It celebrates the belief that Jesus rose from the dead. For many people this day represents new life, hope, and the end of sorrow.

Easter does not fall on the same date each year. It is a movable feast. It happens on the first Sunday after the first full moon that follows the March equinox. That is why the date changes between March and April.

In Lithuania most people who celebrate Easter are part of the Catholic Church. The holiday has deep religious meaning and connects people to centuries of faith and history. It is a time when families think about spiritual beliefs.

Easter Sunday is also tied to spring. It marks a time of renewal in nature after winter. For many Lithuanians the day is a calm, reflective moment to feel thankful and hopeful about the future.

Traditions

Families paint and decorate eggs called margučiai. People use wax, natural dyes or stickers to make bright patterns. Children join egg rolling and tapping games to see whose egg stays whole.

Many take a basket of food to church for blessing. Baskets often hold bread, painted eggs, butter, cheese, ham and sausage. After the blessing families eat a special breakfast together around the table.

The meal includes roasted or baked ham, sausages, fresh bread and sweet cakes or buns. People also serve spring vegetables and butter shaped like a lamb for fun.

Friends and relatives visit. A common greeting is Kristus prisikėlė with the reply Iš tiesų prisikėlė. Visitors share food, stories and laughter.

Travel Tips

Many shops, banks and some museums may be closed or have shorter hours. Public transport can run less often. Plan ahead by checking opening times, booking restaurants or tickets, and carrying some cash and ID in case machines are closed.

Parks and city centers can get busy around midday. Pharmacies often have limited service. Stay with your group, follow local safety rules, and pick quieter times to visit popular sites. Enjoying nature or a calm walk can be a safe, meaningful way to spend the day.
