The date moves every year because it follows the Islamic lunar calendar. It falls on the 10th day of the month called Dhu al Hijjah, right after the pilgrimage season known as the Hajj. In the Comoros the government usually recognizes it as a public holiday.

For people in the Comoros the day is very meaningful. It reminds them about obedience to God, courage, and putting faith into action. People think about giving to those in need and helping neighbors and family.

Eid al Adha also brings communities together across the islands. As a national holiday it marks faith, shared values, and the importance of caring for others in Comorian society.

Traditions

In Comoros people wake early and gather at mosques for special prayers. After prayers families move to homes or courtyards to begin the day of celebration and visiting relatives.

A central custom is the ritual animal sacrifice. Meat is shared in three parts among family, neighbors and the poor. People cook large communal meals so everyone can eat together.

Typical foods include grilled goat or sheep, rice pilau, coconut stews and sweet pastries. Women prepare many dishes while children get sweets and small gifts. People often wear new clothes and women decorate hands with henna.

Families visit graves to honor loved ones. Music, dancing and friendly visits fill the days as neighbors exchange food and greetings in a warm community spirit.

Travel Tips

Many government offices, banks and some shops close or have short hours. Public transport and taxis can be very busy around prayer times and morning markets. Book airport transfers and long trips ahead and carry cash in case ATMs are limited.

Ask your hotel about safe public events and community gatherings you can join. Avoid large crowds if you have mobility or health issues and keep belongings secure. Enjoy hotel or restaurant meals if street food stalls are closed, and follow local guidance from hosts or staff.
