Description

Islamic New Year in Indonesia is called Tahun Baru Islam. It marks the first day of the Islamic month of Muharram. The date follows the lunar Hijri calendar, so it moves earlier by about 10 to 12 days each year.

Flag of Islamic New Year

The holiday means the start of a new Islamic year. For many Muslims it is a time to think about faith, life choices, and the passage of time. It reminds people that calendars can be based on the moon as well as the sun.

Islamic New Year also remembers the Hijra, the migration of the Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina. This event is important because it led to the formation of the early Muslim community and a new way to practice religion together.

In Indonesia the day is recognized widely and often observed as a public holiday. It holds cultural and religious significance, strengthening the sense of shared history and identity among Indonesian Muslims.

Traditions

In many places people gather at mosques for special sermons and extra prayers. At night communities perform takbiran by chanting praises while beating large drums called bedug and walking together through the neighborhood.

Families visit graves to pray for ancestors in a practice called ziarah. Homes and mosques hold recitations of the Quran and collective remembrance sessions called tahlil led by elders or religious teachers.

People share food and invite neighbors for simple communal meals. Popular items include ketupat or other rice dishes, sweet cakes and traditional snacks, and warm sweet soups like kolak served to guests.

Charity and giving are common. Families donate food or money to help the poor and strengthen community bonds.

Travel Tips

Expect many government offices, banks, and some shops to be closed or have shorter hours. Airports and stations can be busier before and after the holiday, so book transport early.

Public gatherings near mosques and city centers get crowded in evenings. Use official taxis or ride apps, watch your belongings, and allow extra time for journeys.

Enjoy the holiday respectfully by observing local dress and behavior, attending public events calmly, checking opening hours online, and supporting small businesses that remain open.
