Description

Feast of the Sacrifice or Eid al Adha is an important Islamic holiday in Indonesia. It honors the story of Prophet Ibrahim who showed loyalty and willingness to obey God. The day reminds people about faith and obedience.

Eid al Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhu al Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Because the lunar year is shorter than the solar year, the date moves earlier by about ten or eleven days each year.

In Indonesia the holiday is a national public holiday. Schools, government offices, and many businesses close so families and communities can observe the day together. It is a time for prayer, reflection, and strengthening faith.

The festival carries deep spiritual meaning. It emphasizes submission to God, compassion for others, and the importance of sharing. For many Indonesians it is a moment to remember moral values and to renew their commitment to faith and community.

Traditions

People gather at mosques for special prayers early in the morning. After prayers, families visit relatives and neighbors to greet each other. Children often wear new clothes and receive small gifts or money. Neighborhoods feel busy and friendly.

Communities organize the qurban slaughter of cows, goats, or sheep at mosques or public areas. Volunteers and youth help in orderly slaughter and meat distribution. Portions are given to poor families, neighbors, and community kitchens so many can share the feast.

Foods center on fresh meat dishes like gulai, rendang, tongseng, sate, and sop. Rice or ketupat often accompany the meals. Markets sell animals and festive ingredients, and homes smell of spices and slow cooked meat for many hours.

Travel Tips

Many banks, government offices and some shops close or have limited hours. Book trains, buses and flights early. Expect heavy traffic to and from cities. Tourist sites may close or run reduced hours so check ahead.

Stay with your group in crowds and watch for pickpockets. Ask before taking photos. Wear respectful clothes and follow local rules at prayer sites. Join community events and try local food where safe. Keep plans flexible and carry cash for places that close electronic payments.
