Description

Birthday of Muhammad is known as Mawlid or Maulid Nabi in Indonesia. It honors the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, who is very important to Muslims as a messenger who taught care, kindness, and guidance about how to live.

The date follows the Islamic lunar calendar, usually observed on the 12th day of the month called Rabi al Awal by many Sunni Muslims. Because the lunar year is shorter than the solar year, the exact date shifts earlier by about ten to eleven days each year.

In Indonesia Mawlid is a national public holiday recognized by the government. Schools, offices, and some businesses close so people can attend community events, listen to talks, and spend time with family reflecting on the Prophet’s life.

The holiday is significant because it brings focus to spiritual values. It encourages learning about Muhammad’s teachings, strengthens community bonds among Muslims, and reminds people to practice compassion, honesty, and service to others.

Traditions

In Indonesia people hold pengajian and tausiyah where leaders read stories about the Prophet and lead sholawat and zikir. Groups perform hadrah or marawis with drums and singing. Mosques and homes are decorated with banners and lights.

Communities arrange kenduri or selamatan, sharing big plates of rice like nasi tumpeng, ketupat, and sweet snacks such as dodol and kue lapis. Volunteers distribute food to neighbors and the poor. Children often sing sholawat together in neighborhood gatherings.

Some places stage wayang kulit or drama telling religious stories. Families do tahlil and doa at home to remember the Prophet. Processions with banners walk through streets in certain towns, ending at the mosque for prayer and sermons.

Travel Tips

Many shops, banks, and some government offices may close or open late. Public transport can be busier, especially around mosques and city centers. Check opening hours and book trains or flights early to avoid crowds and sold out tickets.

Join public events with respect and follow local security directions. Wear modest clothing, keep valuables safe, and use official taxis or rideshares. Visit quieter tourist sites in the morning, and ask hotel staff for safe viewing spots or recommended routes to avoid crowded areas.
