Epiphany 2025
Date: January 6, 2025 (Monday)
Country: Canary Islands Public Holidays
Description
Epiphany in the Canary Islands is a Christian holiday that celebrates the moment when Jesus was revealed to the wider world. It marks the recognition of Jesus as the Son of God by visitors from afar.
The holiday takes place every year on January 6. This date follows the twelve days after Christmas and is known across many Christian countries as a special religious feast.
Epiphany is also the official end of the Christmas season. It is a public holiday in Spain, including all the islands, so schools and many workplaces are closed for the day.
The day is significant because it connects people to their faith and to each other. It reminds communities of generosity, wonder, and the idea that important truths can be shared with everyone.
Traditions
In the Canary Islands big parades called Cabalgatas fill the streets. Colorful floats, music and people dressed as the Three Kings travel through towns. Crowds cheer and sweets or small gifts are thrown to children from the floats.
Children leave shoes by the door with hay or water for the camels and a letter for the Kings. After the parade, families put out treats and go to bed. In the morning the shoes are filled with presents, and children excitedly open them together.
Special foods are shared, especially the Roscón de Reyes sweet ring which sometimes hides a small toy or a bean. People also eat turrón and other local sweets while visiting neighbors and joining small processions.
Travel Tips
Many shops, banks and government offices close or have short hours on January 6. Public transport can run on a holiday schedule. Book ferries, buses and taxis in advance and check timetables so you do not get stuck.
Parades and street events bring big crowds and road closures. Keep your bags close and carry ID and some cash. Reserve restaurants early and follow police instructions around barriers. Enjoy public spaces, watch for traffic, and pick quieter times to visit attractions for a peaceful visit.
