The holiday takes place once a year based on the Islamic lunar calendar. It happens about seventy days after the end of Ramadan. Because the calendar is shorter than the solar year, dates move earlier by about eleven days each year.

In Ghana, Eid al Adha is a time for religious reflection and community. People gather at mosques and open spaces to pray together. The day reminds Muslims of obedience, compassion, and the need to help others.

The holiday is significant because it connects families and communities to shared beliefs. It also highlights care for those in need and strengthens social bonds across different groups in Ghanaian society.

Traditions

In Ghana people gather at mosques for special prayers. After prayers families meet outside to greet one another. Men often lead the animal sacrifice while children run around and elders sit and talk about family news.

Meat from goats sheep or cows is shared widely. Families keep some for their own meals and give large portions to relatives neighbors and the poor. Sharing shows care and helps those who need food.

Homes are cleaned and people wear new clothes. Women and girls may apply henna and cook big meals like jollof rice stews and roasted meat. Children get small gifts or pocket money and communities sometimes sing and drum.

Travel Tips

Many banks, government offices and some shops close or have short hours. Expect busy roads, crowded markets and packed buses. Book flights, ferries and hotels early. Carry ID, cash and a charged phone for emergencies.

Watch for public events and road closures. Stay in well lit areas and avoid loud crowds at night. Be respectful of local customs, wear modest clothes and accept invitations to community events to enjoy the holiday safely and meaningfully.
