Description

Maundy Thursday in Spain is a Christian holy day that remembers the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples. It is part of Holy Week, which leads up to Easter. Many people see it as a time to reflect on service and faith.

The date changes each year because it depends on the date of Easter. Maundy Thursday always falls on the Thursday before Easter Sunday. Easter is a movable feast linked to the phases of the moon, so the date moves between March and April.

The day is significant because Christians believe important events happened then. These include Jesus sharing a final meal, teaching his followers about love and service, and establishing the practice of communion. It marks the start of the Easter Triduum, the three most sacred days in the Christian calendar leading to Easter.

Traditions

In many Spanish towns huge processions wind through streets with pasos, the carved scenes from the Passion. Nazarenos wear robes and pointed hoods while penitents walk barefoot or carry candles. People often stand in silence as floats pass.

Sung saetas from balconies break the quiet with strong, emotional songs. In churches there are evening masses and some cathedrals hold a washing of feet ceremony led by a priest. Women may wear a black mantilla and people use candles and incense during rituals.

Food is simple and tied to the season. Families and bakeries make torrijas, potaje de vigilia with chickpeas and spinach, and dishes with salted cod. Many people also visit several churches that night as part of local custom.

Travel Tips

Many shops, banks, and some museums close or have short hours. Trains and buses run on holiday timetables with fewer services in the evening. Expect crowded streets near city centers and main event routes, and book trains and tours ahead.

Stay aware of your belongings in crowds and follow local police instructions. Wear comfortable shoes and dress respectfully. Check opening hours each morning and use taxi apps if public transport is limited. Take photos but give space to participants and enjoy quiet moments in parks or cafes.
