The holiday takes place each year on the tenth day of the Islamic month Dhu al-Hijjah. Because the Islamic calendar is lunar, the date moves earlier by about eleven days each year on the Gregorian calendar.

Eid al-Adha marks the end of the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca. For many it honors the story of Prophet Ibrahim and his strong trust in God, a story shared by Muslims in Eritrea and around the world.

The day is significant because it emphasizes devotion, compassion, and community. It is a public holiday in Eritrea, recognized across society, reflecting the importance of religious life and social unity in the nation.

Traditions

Families gather early for special prayers at the mosque. Men and boys often wear white clothes. After prayer, households perform the sacrificial ritual. The meat is divided so relatives, neighbors and the poor all receive a share.

Homes fill with cooking smells of roasted lamb and spicy stews. People serve meat with injera and legumes like shiro or hilbet. Sweets, coffee ceremonies and fresh bread are common. Children get new clothes and treats.

Visits to relatives and neighbors are important. People exchange greetings, small gifts and help each other with cooking and cleaning. Charity and sharing food are central, making the celebration very communal and warm.

Travel Tips

Many banks, government offices and some shops close for several days. Plan paperwork and cash needs before arriving. Book intercity buses or flights early because travel is busier and seats fill fast.

Markets and restaurants may open at different hours. Expect crowded streets and more traffic around mornings and evenings. Keep important documents and bags secure and allow extra travel time.

Join public celebrations or polite local invitations to enjoy the holiday safely. Dress modestly, follow local guidance, and avoid crowded livestock or market areas for health and safety.
