The date changes each year because it follows the Islamic lunar calendar. It comes about 70 days after the end of Ramadan. In Egypt the government and communities announce the official days based on moon sighting.

Eid al-Adha is linked to the pilgrimage to Mecca, called Hajj. Many Muslims around the world feel connected through this event, even if they do not go on the pilgrimage themselves. It reminds people of duty and trust in God.

For Egyptians, the holiday has deep religious meaning and brings families together in shared belief. It is one of the two main Islamic holidays and is treated with respect and reverence across the country.

Traditions

Families wake early for communal prayers at the mosque. After prayer they meet relatives, wear new clothes, and visit older family members to exchange greetings. Children receive small gifts or money called Eidiya and enjoy sweets.

Many households buy a sheep or goat for the ritual. Butchers or licensed slaughterhouses often handle the sacrifice. Meat is divided into three parts for family, friends, and the poor. Neighbors share plates of roasted meat, kebab, kofta, and rice.

Homes are cleaned and decorated. Special dishes include roast lamb, fatteh with rice and yogurt, stuffed vegetables, and sweet pastries. People also visit graves to remember loved ones and give charity to those in need.

Travel Tips

Many government offices, banks, and some museums close or have reduced hours. Expect heavy traffic and full trains and buses the day before and after the holiday. Book tickets, taxis, or excursions in advance and allow extra travel time.

Markets, restaurants, and public events get very busy. Stay in well lit, crowded areas and keep valuables secure. Follow local guidance around animal or temporary market areas for safety. Join organized tours or hotel events to enjoy the atmosphere safely and respectfully.
