Description

Christmas Day in Denmark falls on December 25. It is the second day of the Danish Christmas period and is a public holiday across the country. Many people have the day off from work and school.

Flag of Christmas Day

For many Danes the day is about rest and being together with family and close friends. It follows the main celebration the evening before but still holds importance as a calm, reflective day.

Religiously it marks the Christian celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. For the wider society it is a time to pause at the end of the year and focus on caring, kindness, and gratitude.

Nationally Christmas Day is part of Danish cultural identity. It brings communities together through shared values and marks an important moment in the yearly calendar that many people look forward to.

Traditions

In Denmark families focus on Christmas Eve as the main celebration. They decorate the home with a Christmas tree, lights, and candles. Many put up an advent wreath and a paper calendar with small treats.

The evening starts with a warm meal. Common dishes are roast pork or duck, caramelized potatoes, red cabbage, and rich gravy. For dessert they serve risalamande, a rice pudding with a hidden almond and cherry sauce. The person who finds the almond wins a small prize.

After dinner people often hold hands and dance around the tree while singing Christmas songs. Gifts are opened on Christmas Eve. Some homes leave out treats for the nisse, a small Christmas gnome that brings good luck.

Travel Tips

Many shops, museums and tourist attractions are closed on Christmas Day. Public transport runs but with reduced schedules and fewer services. Book trains, buses or restaurants in advance and check official timetables that morning to avoid waiting outside in cold weather.

Streets can be quieter, but major stations and airport areas stay busy. Carry ID, emergency contacts and a charged phone. Enjoy safe outdoor walks in parks or by the water and respect private properties and quiet neighborhoods.
