Feast of the Sacrifice (Eid al-Adha) 2025
Date: June 6, 2025 (Friday)
Country: Djibouti Public Holidays
Description
Eid al Adha, called the Feast of the Sacrifice, is one of the most important Muslim holidays. In Djibouti it is a time for people to remember faith, duty, and care for others in their community.
The holiday happens each year on the 10th day of the Islamic month of Dhu al Hijjah. Because the Islamic calendar follows the moon, the date changes each year by about 10 or 11 days compared to the calendar most people use.
Eid al Adha is linked to the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. It marks the end of Hajj and reminds Muslims of the story of Prophet Ibrahim and his willingness to obey God. People reflect on faith and sacrifice.
In Djibouti the holiday is significant for families and the whole nation. It highlights obedience to God, sharing with those in need, and strengthening bonds among neighbors and relatives across the country.
Traditions
Families dress in their best clothes and walk to the mosque for morning prayers. After prayers they greet relatives and neighbors with hugs and smiles. Children run between homes receiving small gifts or money from elders.
Many households perform the sacrificial ritual with goats, sheep, or camels. The meat is split into three parts for family, friends, and those in need. Neighbors often share plates so everyone can join the celebration. People clean and decorate their homes beforehand.
Feast meals include roasted goat or camel, rice stews, and spicy sauces. Sambusas and sweet pastries appear for snacks. Women may apply henna on hands. Evenings bring communal meals, singing, and sometimes traditional dance in neighborhoods.
Travel Tips
Banks, government offices and some shops close or have short hours. Expect crowded roads and busy buses before and after the holiday. Book airport transfers and hotels early. Avoid taking photos of people without permission and carry ID and extra cash.
Join public gatherings in safe, well lit areas and stick to main tourist sites and hotels if unsure. Check opening hours before you go. Stay hydrated in the heat, travel with a friend, and be respectful to enjoy the holiday safely and meaningfully.
