Description

Easter Sunday in Germany is a Christian holiday that celebrates the belief that Jesus rose from the dead. For many people it is a day of deep meaning, faith, and reflection about life and hope.

The date changes each year. Easter Sunday falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon that comes on or after March 21. This means it can be in March or April, depending on the lunar cycle.

Easter is a public holiday in Germany. Shops, offices, and many services are closed. People often use the day to rest, spend time with family, and attend church for special services that mark the importance of the day.

The holiday is significant because it represents new life, renewal, and hope. For Christians it is the most important event in the church year. It also marks the end of the Lent season of reflection and preparation.

Traditions

On Easter Sunday many German families decorate and paint eggs. Children hunt for brightly colored eggs hidden in gardens. People also hang painted eggs on small trees called Osterbaum. Chocolate eggs and bunnies are given as treats to children.

Families often gather for a festive meal. Traditional foods include roasted lamb, egg dishes, and sweet braided bread called Osterzopf. In some regions people light big bonfires called Osterfeuer the night before or on Easter Sunday.

People play egg tapping games where they knock hard ends together to see whose egg stays whole. Some attend church services or watch local processions. Markets sell painted eggs, decorations, and seasonal sweets for the holiday.

Travel Tips

Many shops and supermarkets are closed on Easter Sunday, and some museums or attractions use special hours. Trains and long distance buses run but can be busy around Good Friday to Easter Monday, so book tickets early and expect crowds.

Enjoy local markets, parks, or public concerts and respect quiet rules in residential areas. Carry ID and some cash because small places may not take cards. Check pharmacy and emergency opening times, keep medicines handy, and confirm restaurant or attraction hours before you go.
