Description

Christmas Day in Cyprus is a public holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. It falls on December 25 each year, the same date most Christian churches around the world observe the event.

Flag of Christmas Day

For many people in Cyprus the day is mainly religious. Christians attend church services to remember the meaning of Jesus coming into the world. The day is a chance to reflect on faith and hope.

Christmas is also important as a time for families to come together. Schools, banks, and many businesses close so people can spend time with loved ones and rest from work.

The holiday has national importance because most Cypriots are Christian. It helps shape the island's calendar and public life, and it marks a peaceful, reflective moment in the year for many communities.

Traditions

In Cyprus families wake early to attend church services on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. People sing hymns and stand for long parts of the liturgy. After church they exchange hugs and small gifts, often meeting relatives at home.

Homes are decorated with Christmas trees, nativity scenes and lights. Children sing carols called kalanta and may go door to door with triangles and drums to collect sweets or coins. Santa Claus appears at parties, but traditional songs and church rituals stay central.

Special foods appear on the table. Families bake Christopsomo, kourabiedes and melomakarona. The main meal often features roast lamb or pork with vegetables, shared with many relatives and neighbors in warm, noisy gatherings.

Travel Tips

Many shops, banks and some museums close on Christmas Day. Public buses run less often and taxis can be busy. Book restaurants or transport in advance. Some Christmas markets and concerts still run in towns.

Carry cash and ID. Pharmacies operate on duty only, so check opening hours. Roads can be quieter but parking near events fills fast. Keep valuables safe and follow local safety signs. In emergencies call 112. Enjoy walks, seaside views and quieter sights with respect for local residents.
