Description

Christmas Day in Colombia is a national public and bank holiday that marks the celebration of the birth of Jesus. For many people it is a deeply religious day tied to Christian beliefs and faith.

Flag of Christmas Day

It takes place on December 25 each year. The date is fixed on the calendar and is part of a longer holiday season that Colombians observe at the end of the year.

The day is significant because it brings families and communities together. It is a time when people reflect on their beliefs, express gratitude, and focus on family bonds and community ties.

As an official public holiday, many businesses and banks are closed. This pause allows people to spend time with loved ones and to participate in communal and spiritual life.

Christmas also marks a moment of hope and renewal for the year ahead. It has strong cultural meaning across Colombia and influences social rhythms at the end of the year.

Traditions

In Colombia many families gather on Christmas Eve for Nochebuena. They share a big dinner, often with tamales, buñuelos and natilla. People sing villancicos and listen to vallenato or cumbia music while children wait for gifts at midnight.

Communities set up pesebres, small nativity scenes, with lights and figurines in homes and churches. Friends and neighbors visit each other, bringing snacks or sweets like arequipe. Fireworks and loud celebrations mark the midnight hour and welcome Christmas Day.

A popular ritual is the Novena de Aguinaldos. Families and friends meet for nine nights to pray, sing and read short reflections. They pass around small treats called aguinaldos and play simple games to celebrate together.

Travel Tips

Many shops, banks and some public offices are closed on Christmas Day. Tourist areas and big restaurants stay open, but book ahead. Airports and roads get very busy before and after the holiday. Carry some cash and your ID.

Look for public light displays and hotel or guided events to enjoy the day safely. Avoid very crowded spots at night and keep valuables close. Use official taxis or ride apps, know local emergency numbers, and respect shorter opening hours for a calm, meaningful visit.
