Feast of the Sacrifice (Eid al-Adha) 2025
Date: June 6, 2025 (Friday)
Country: Cameroon Public Holidays
Description
Eid al Adha, called the Feast of the Sacrifice, is an important Muslim holiday in Cameroon. It focuses on faith, obedience, and thankfulness. People remember the story of Prophet Ibrahim and his willingness to obey God.
The holiday falls on the 10th day of Dhu al Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Because the calendar is lunar, the date moves earlier by about 11 days each year in the Gregorian calendar.
In Cameroon, Eid al Adha is a recognized public holiday. Schools, many businesses, and government offices may close so families and communities can observe the day together. It is one of the major religious holidays for Muslims across the country.
The day is significant because it highlights sacrifice, charity, and caring for others. It strengthens community bonds and reminds people to help those in need. For many, it is a time of spiritual reflection and gratitude.
Traditions
In Cameroon families gather for communal prayers at the mosque in the morning. After prayer men often lead the animal sacrifice. Neighbors and poor people are given meat. People wear new or their best clothes and greet each other warmly.
Food is central. Grilled and spiced meat appears everywhere, like suya in the north and stews with rice or couscous. Households cook large meals to share with family and guests. Children receive sweets, small gifts, or money after meals.
Women and girls may apply henna on hands. In many places people visit relatives and exchange food. In some regions there are drums, singing, and dancing as part of the celebration and community life.
Travel Tips
Many shops, banks and government offices close or have reduced hours during Eid al Adha. Plan errands before or after the holiday. Public transport can be crowded in cities and at bus stations. Book tickets early and allow extra travel time.
Visit markets and public events with respect. Dress modestly and be respectful of prayer areas. Avoid photographing people without permission. Support local businesses by buying food or crafts. Keep emergency numbers and ID with you, and stay in well lit, busy areas at night.
