Description

Laylat al Qadr means the Night of Power or Night of Decree in Islam. It is believed to be the night when the first revelations of the Quran were sent to the Prophet Muhammad.

In the Republic of Côte d Ivoire many Muslims observe this night during Ramadan. It falls within the last ten nights of Ramadan, commonly on one of the odd nights such as the 21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th night. The exact night can vary by community.

Laylat al Qadr is seen as the most spiritually important night of the year. Muslims believe prayers and good deeds on this night are worth much more than at other times.

In Côte d Ivoire this night is observed by individuals and communities but it is not an official national or bank holiday. Muslims across the country mark it with increased prayer, reflection, and remembrance.

Traditions

In Côte d Ivoire families gather in mosques and homes for long night prayers and Quran recitation. People stay awake together, take turns reading aloud, and make special prayers late into the night.

Women and men prepare large shared meals. Common foods include rice with meat stews, fried plantains and sweet tea. Neighbors bring plates to each other and children often get sweets and small treats.

Charity is important. Families give food and money to needy neighbors and mosque kitchens. Volunteers distribute meals outside mosques so everyone can join the night gatherings.

Communities decorate homes and mosque courtyards with lights and fabric. Older people lead chants and prayers while young people help serve food and clean up afterward.

Travel Tips

Expect mosque areas and community centers to be crowded at night and into early morning. Some shops and public services may close or have shorter hours. Plan travel outside prayer times and allow extra time for taxis or buses.

Visit public events and markets in daylight for safety. Dress respectfully and follow local guidance from hosts or authorities. Keep important documents, water, and a phone charged. Ask hotel staff about safe walking routes and quiet spots to rest.
