Description

Feast of the Sacrifice, called Hari Raya Haji in Brunei, is an important Muslim holiday. People wear their best clothes and go to special prayers at mosques or open prayer grounds.

It takes place on the 10th day of Dhu al Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The date moves earlier by about 10 to 12 days each year compared to the solar calendar.

Families perform the qurban sacrifice to remember Prophet Ibrahim. Animals are shared with relatives, neighbors, and the poor. The day teaches charity, community care, and obedience to God.

In Brunei it is a public holiday. People visit family, give food to those in need, and join together in prayer and celebration.

Traditions

Eid al Adha in Brunei begins with special morning prayers at mosques. Families wear new clothes and join communal takbir chanting. The government gives a public holiday so most people can visit relatives and attend the prayer gathering.

A main ritual is the sacrifice of a sheep, goat, cow or camel. Meat is divided into three parts for family, friends and the poor. Many people also give extra donations to mosques and charities to help needy families.

Food is important. Families cook rendang, curry, rice cakes and sweet kuih for guests. In rural areas slaughtering may happen at home while city residents use official slaughter centers. Customs stay similar across regions with small local differences.

Travel Tips

Eid al Adha in Brunei means many shops, banks and government offices will close for a few days. Expect quieter streets near government areas, busy roads around mosques at prayer times, and special markets selling food and sweets.

To enjoy the holiday, join public festivities politely, dress modestly and respect prayer areas. Use taxis or plan travel outside major prayer times to avoid crowds. Sample local dishes, watch sheep sacrifice ceremonies from a distance and give thanks quietly to be safe and respectful.
