Description

Eid al-Adha, called the Feast of the Sacrifice, is a major Muslim holiday. It remembers the prophet Abraham showing faith by being willing to sacrifice for God. Families gather, pray, and celebrate together across Benin.

The holiday begins on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar. The exact date moves each year because the Islamic calendar follows the moon. The festival lasts about three to four days and comes right after the Hajj pilgrimage.

In Benin, Muslims attend special prayers, perform an animal sacrifice, and share the meat with family, neighbors, and the poor. The day honors faith, charity, and community, bringing people together in kindness and gratitude.

Traditions

Eid al Adha in Benin starts with a special prayer at the mosque. Families wear their best clothes and gather with neighbors. Men often go to the mosque while women prepare food and ready the house for guests.

A key ritual is the sacrifice of an animal, usually a sheep, goat, or cow. Meat is shared with family, neighbors, and people in need. Giving to the poor and visiting relatives are very important parts of the holiday.

Regions celebrate with small differences. In northern areas with large Muslim communities the rituals are very public and large. In southern cities like Cotonou the day is quieter and mixed with local customs, but the main ideas of prayer, sharing, and charity stay the same.

Travel Tips

During Eid al Adha in Benin you can expect shops, banks, and some offices to close for a few days. Markets and main roads get busier before the holiday as people travel and buy food and gifts.

Visit local prayer grounds respectfully, dress modestly, and accept invitations to share meals. Use taxis early or late to avoid crowds, carry cash as ATMs may be closed, and photograph only with permission to enjoy the holiday safely and meaningfully.
