Epiphany 2025
Date: January 6, 2025 (Monday)
Country: Belgium Public Holidays
Description
Epiphany, also called Three Kings Day, remembers the visit of the Wise Men to baby Jesus. It celebrates the moment when Jesus was shown to people outside his own family. Churches hold special services that explain this story.
Epiphany takes place on January 6 each year. In Belgium people attend Mass, sing songs, and sometimes join small processions. Children may dress as the Magi and go caroling in some towns.
The day is important because it shows that Jesus came for everyone, not just one group. In parts of Belgium families share a special king cake and bless their homes, keeping old religious and local traditions alive.
Traditions
Epiphany in Belgium is called Driekoningen. Children often dress as the three wise men and go singing from house to house. They carry a small star and collect sweets or a few euros. People enjoy this kind, playful tradition.
Many families get a special cake called a koningsvlaai or galette des rois. A small figure is hidden inside. Whoever finds it is king or queen for the day. Churches hold services and some people write the letters C M B and the year above their doors with chalk to bless the home.
Regions vary a bit. In Flanders door to door singing and chalking are common. In Wallonia there are more parades and public shows with actors playing the wise men. Some towns hold large historic processions.
Travel Tips
Epiphany in Belgium may mean some shops and banks are closed, especially smaller local places. Expect church services, small parades, and people eating a special cake called galette or kerststronk in some regions. Trains may run on a holiday schedule.
To enjoy the day, join a local event or watch a procession from a safe distance. Book transport and restaurants in advance. Dress for winter weather, keep valuables secure, and be polite at religious ceremonies to have a meaningful visit.
