Description

Feast of the Sacrifice, called Eid al Adha, is an important Muslim holiday. People remember the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice for God. Families pray together, give to the poor, and visit relatives to celebrate.

The date changes each year because it follows the Islamic lunar calendar. It comes about 70 days after the end of Ramadan. In Bosnia and Herzegovina the holiday is a public holiday, so schools and many businesses close for a few days.

Many families who can afford it sacrifice a sheep or cow. Meat is shared with family, neighbors, and people in need. The holiday is a time of charity, family togetherness, and religious reflection for Bosnian Muslims.

Traditions

Feast of the Sacrifice, called Kurban Bayram in Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a major Muslim holiday. Families start by praying together at the mosque, often wearing their best clothes. Children receive small gifts or money.

A main custom is the sacrifice of an animal, usually a sheep. Meat is divided into three parts. One part stays with the family, one is shared with relatives and friends, and one is given to the poor and neighbors.

People visit relatives and friends, share big meals, and offer hospitality. Common foods include roasted lamb, pilav rice, bread, and sweet pastries. Homes are cleaned and decorated ahead of the holiday.

Regional differences exist. Rural areas keep older customs and large gatherings. Cities have more modern celebrations and help programs for the needy.

Travel Tips

Expect many shops, banks, and public offices to be closed for a few days. Mosques, family homes, and markets will be busy with prayers, meals, and celebrations. Roads can be crowded at the start and end of the holiday.

Be respectful of clothing and rituals. Join public events and try local dishes at small eateries. Book trains or buses early and allow extra travel time. Ask permission before taking photos of people or sacrifices and carry your ID for security checks.
