Description

Feast of the Sacrifice, called Qurban Bayram in Azerbaijan, is a Muslim holiday about the prophet Ibrahim and his willingness to sacrifice for God. People remember faith and obedience with prayers and special sayings.

The holiday falls on the 10th day of Dhu al Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic lunar calendar. Because the lunar year is shorter, the exact Gregorian date moves each year. In Azerbaijan it usually lasts two to four days as a public holiday.

Families sacrifice an animal such as a sheep and divide the meat among family, neighbors, and the poor. People visit relatives, go to mosque, give charity, and celebrate together to show care and community.

Traditions

Eid al Adha in Azerbaijan is a time for family, prayer, and giving. Families attend mosque prayers in the morning. People wear their best clothes. They remember the story of sacrifice and thank God for blessings. Neighbors and friends visit one another.

A key custom is sacrificing a sheep, cow, or goat. Meat is shared with relatives, neighbors, and the poor. Homes fill with smells of pilaf, roasted meat, and baked breads. Sweets and tea are served to guests. Children receive small gifts and extra attention.

Regional differences exist. In rural areas larger animals may be slaughtered and communal feasts held. In Baku and cities people often buy meat from markets or use slaughterhouses. Local songs and dances may appear during celebrations.

Travel Tips

Expect many shops, banks, and government offices closed for several days. Mosques hold large prayers and public events happen in parks and squares. Roads, buses, and airports may be busy before and after the holiday as people visit family.

Enjoy the holiday by watching public celebrations and trying traditional food. Dress modestly and ask before taking photos. Book transport and hotels early. If you join a family meal, accept simple gifts and follow local customs to share respect and kindness.
