Description

Feast of the Sacrifice, called Kurban Bajram in Albania, is a major Muslim holiday. Families go to special prayers, give thanks, and remember the prophet Abraham. People show love by helping the poor and sharing food with neighbors.

The holiday happens each year on the 10th day of the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah. Because the Islamic calendar follows the moon, the date changes by about 10 or 11 days earlier each year on the regular calendar. It also comes right after the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca.

In Albania it is a public holiday. Families gather, perform the sacrifice of an animal according to religious rules, and distribute meat to relatives and needy people. It is a time for faith, charity, and togetherness.

Traditions

Eid al-Adha in Albania is called Kurban Bajram. Families go to mosque for prayers and listen to sermons about sacrifice and sharing. People wear their best clothes and greet each other with hugs and kisses.

A main custom is sacrificing a sheep or goat. Meat is divided into three parts. One part stays with the family, one part is given to relatives, and one part is given to the poor. This shows care and community.

Homes fill with special foods like roasted meat, pilaf, stuffed vegetables, and sweet pastries. Neighbors often visit and share meals together.

In the north people keep older village traditions and songs. Coastal areas may have simpler gatherings but the spirit of sharing stays the same.
