Feast of the Sacrifice (Eid al-Adha) 2025
Date: June 6, 2025 (Friday)
Country: United Arab Emirates Public Holidays
Description
Eid al Adha, called the Feast of the Sacrifice, is an important Muslim holiday. It remembers Prophet Ibrahim and his willingness to obey God, even when asked to make a great sacrifice.
The holiday falls on the 10th day of Dhu al Hijjah in the Islamic lunar calendar. Dates move about 11 days earlier each year in the Gregorian calendar and follow the end of the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca.
In the UAE people attend special prayers, visit family, and share festive meals. Families who can afford it perform a ritual animal sacrifice called Qurbani and divide the meat among relatives, neighbors, and those in need.
Eid al Adha is a time for faith, charity, and togetherness. The UAE government announces the exact public holiday days each year.
Traditions
Eid al Adha in the UAE begins with a special morning prayer at mosques. Families dress in new clothes and visit relatives. People listen to a sermon and say prayers for the poor and for blessings.
Many families perform a sacrifice of a sheep, goat, or cow. Meat is divided into three parts. One part is kept by the family. One part is given to friends and neighbors. One part is donated to the needy.
People also share big meals with rice, lamb dishes and sweets. Some use organized slaughter centers or charities to help. Celebrations include visits, coffee gatherings and children receiving small gifts or money. Different communities follow similar customs with small local variations.
Travel Tips
Eid al Adha in the UAE means many government offices and some shops close or open late. Malls, restaurants, and tourist sites may stay open but hours change. Airports and roads get very busy before and after the holiday because people travel to see family.
Be respectful of local customs. Dress modestly, ask before taking photos, and avoid filming during prayers or sacrificial rituals. Try traditional food, visit public celebrations, and book taxis or hotels early. Stay patient with crowds and follow local rules to enjoy the holiday safely.
