Description

Korité is the local name for Eid al Fitr, the Muslim festival that marks the end of Ramadan. In Sierra Leone it is a national public holiday, often called Korité day. The name comes from the local language usage.

The date moves each year because it follows the lunar calendar. Korité takes place when the new moon is sighted after Ramadan, so the exact day shifts by about 10 to 12 days each year. Authorities announce the official day in advance.

When Korité falls on a weekend, Sierra Leone may declare a substitute day during the following workweek. That means people get an official day off on a weekday so they do not lose their public holiday.

Korité is significant because it marks the end of a month of daily fasting and spiritual focus. It is a time for giving thanks, showing community support, and recognizing shared faith and national unity across Sierra Leone.

Traditions

On Korité people wake early, bathe, and dress in bright new clothes. Families visit elders to greet them. Children receive small gifts or money and run between houses saying hello. Neighbors also come to share the day.

Homes open to guests. Hosts serve large plates of rice with tomato stew, fried fish, chicken, and cassava dishes. Sweet treats and kola nuts appear. People sit together and eat from the same bowl to show unity. Loud laughter and storytelling fill the yards.

Rituals include visiting the mosque area for short gatherings and blessing elders with hands on shoulders. Some families clean and decorate homes. Music, clapping, drumming, and dancing continue until evening as everyone celebrates together.

Travel Tips

During Korité substitute day many banks, government offices and some shops will be closed. Public transport may run on limited schedules and markets get very busy in the morning. Carry enough cash and confirm opening times before you travel.

To enjoy the day safely, join public events respectfully and stay with trusted guides or groups. Book taxis and accommodation early, keep valuables secure, and expect tourist sites to be quieter midday. Plan trips around peak travel times to avoid crowds.
